We are not living in a traditional, residential Japanese neighborhood. Disappointing in some ways but also a once in a lifetime experience. If we ever live in Japan again on our own it will likely not be here. Check out our neighborhood website:

Also, a comment on the weather: it is JUST like Seattle. Maybe less rain, but when it rains it is misty. It has been sunny and really cold- it started snowing in Saitama last weekend when I went to visit our friend Sayo. Although the rainy season begins in June so we're here at a good time, especially since we walk EVERYWHERE. I'm definitely excited about the new bike I got on Sunday...should arrive Wednesday between noon and 4 pm (Japanese efficiency).
That's another thing- people ship things here all the time. Sayo suggested that we ship our skis/snowboard ahead of time to the resort we're going to this weekend for Stephen's birthday [25th!]. Apparently it's cheap and a popular way to transport things. Like our bike- we bought it pretty far away at a cheaper family store (think Fred Meyer). Bikes are not allowed on the trains so shipping was the best (or only) option for us. The train system is incredibly convenient normally, but incredibly inconvenient if you have anything large to transport.
More photos tomorrow!
